Plugin Vehicle Sales Reach Milestone in April 2023

Global plugin vehicle registrations surged by 70% in April 2023 compared to the same period the previous year, reaching a milestone of 928,000 units sold. This indicates that the era of monthly sales below one million for plugin electric vehicles may be coming to an end. Plugin vehicles commanded a 14% share of the overall auto market, with battery electric vehicles (BEVs) alone holding a 10% market share. This signifies that the automotive industry is firmly within the Electric Disruption Zone.
Plugless hybrids also experienced strong growth, with 808,000 units sold in April. Combined with plugin electric vehicles, over 1.7 million units, or 26% of the global market, had some form of electrification.

The best-selling models in April were the Tesla Model Y, followed by the BYD Qin Plus, which surpassed the Tesla Model 3. The BYD Song ranked fifth, trailing behind its sibling, the BYD Yuan Plus. The introduction of the BYD Frigate 07 may be impacting the Song’s market share.

Several records were broken in April, including the BYD Dolphin registering 30,607 units and the GAC Aion Y achieving 21,069 units. The Wuling Bingo secured the 10th spot with 15,011 registrations, potentially posing competition to the BYD Dolphin.

The Zeekr 001 benefited from enhanced production capacity and achieved improved sales performance with 6,463 registrations in May. The Leap Motor C11 SUV excelled in the midsize category, while Great Wall’s Ora Good Cat made a comeback in the compact category. The Changan Lumin saw impressive sales figures in the city car category.

These remarkable sales figures highlight the ongoing transition toward electrification in the global automotive market, signaling a shift toward a cleaner and more sustainable transportation future.
