Charging Infrastructure: An Obstacle to EV Adoption

Electric vehicle (EV) adoption has been steadily growing in recent years, but a lack of charging infrastructure remains a key challenge. According to the EV readiness index 2023 by LeasePlan, the charging infrastructure maturity of countries like Germany and France has increased significantly, contributing to a smoother EV transition.
However, charging infrastructure continues to be the worst-scoring EV readiness category, with public charge points relative to population and EV registrations, and availability of fast chargers relative to highway size, being key factors.

Despite some countries showing improvements in charging infrastructure, there are still several European countries that lag behind. While Denmark, France, Germany, Slovakia, and Spain showed higher scores in charging development compared to the previous year, others still struggle to catch up.

A mature charging infrastructure is essential for a successful transition to EVs, as it provides peace of mind for EV owners and encourages more people to make the switch. With markets like Germany, France, and the United Kingdom making significant progress in charging infrastructure, it is hoped that other countries will follow suit and take measures to improve their charging networks.
